ASTA Trial Rules

Since ASTA trial courses vary from event to event, course rules in general cannot be specified.

All ASTA sanctioned events, however, are to follow the rules listed below:

1. Regardless of course design, all ASTA trials must be points/time or time only events.

2. ASTA trials may be open to all breeds or limited to Australian Shepherds but cannot be limited to any other breed. Similarly priority may be given to Australian Shepherds, but cannot be given to other breeds.

3. Entries for trials sponsored by ASTA only must be made on an official ASTA entry form. Entires for trials co-sponsored by ASTA and other organizations must be made on forms that

a) list both ASTA and the co-sponsoring organization at the top of the form;
b) include all information contained in the official forms of ASTA and the co-sponsoring organization:
c) included releases from liabililty for ASTA and the co-sponsoring organization.

4. ASTA expects sportsmanlike behavior and trial organizers and/or their designees should make handlers aware that organizers and/or their designees can remove anyone from the competition they deem to be exhibiting unsportsmanlike conduct and that such persons are subject to sanctions as specified in the ASTA Bylaws.

5. Cruelty to dogs will not be tolerated at ASTA events; trial organizers should expel anyone from the trial grounds who physically abuses his/her dog.

6. Overworking or abuse of stock will not be tolerated.  Trial organizers and/or their designees have the right and the obligation to stop all runs when this occurs.

7. Trial organizers appoint Dispute Committees to deal with cases where handlers dispute their score. Handlers may only dispute their own score, not the scores of others.  The decisions of Dispute Committees are final and not subject to appeal by disputants.

8. Trial organizers are responsible for collecting and distributing funds and prize money.

9. Trial organizer's decisions are final and not subject to appeal by handlers.
